SPEAKERS / Dan Geschwind

geschwind

Dan Geschwind is Professor of Neurology and Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences and  Gordon and Virginia MacDonald Distinguished Chair in Human Genetics, UCLA, USA. He founded the neurogenetics program at UCLA in 1997. Since then, his laboratory has focused on integrating genetics and genomics with basic neurobiology to develop a more systematic understanding of neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions. For the last 10 years Dan Geschwind’s research focused heavily on finding genes causing autism and related conditions and emphasizing the development of shared scientific resources for genetic research by providing scientific leadership for the development of the Autism Genetic Resource Exchange (www.AGRE.org), the leading international resource for the genetic study of autism in families. As director of the UCLA Center for Autism Research and Treatment he helped to develop a coherent multidisciplinary program and several collaborative studies in ASD genetics. Prof Geschwind’s laboratory has worked to begin to successfully connect genetic risk for disease to brain circuitry and molecular function both in humans, and in vitro and in vivo model systems. One key aspect of their effort has been the application of functional genomics to complex CNS disease, as well as the development and application of new analytic methods that elucidate the underlying network organization in multi-dimensional data, permitting integration of genomic and genetic data with phenotype data on a large scale. Dan Geschwind published in excess of 200 articles, many of these in prestigious international journals like Nature, Science, Cell or Nature Genetics.
